Rats & Mice

Rats and Mice are considered to be as numerous both in numbers and species as all other orders of mammals combined. Rodents are a serious pest to human settlement and all forms of agriculture and food production as well as being significant predators of a wide range of native species including birds, bats, lizards, snails, frogs and insect species, as well as the flowers, fruits and seeds of native and introduced plants. Their numbers can reach plague proportions especially in rural settings where they feed voraciously on seeds, cereals and other agricultural products.

In New Zealand we have only four introduced species from the Muridae family (rats and mice). From largest to smallest, New Zealand has the Norway rat (sometimes called brown or water rat), ship rat (common or black), Pacific rat (Polynesian or kiore) and house mouse (field).
